The LaGrange Police Department presently has two School Resource Officers
(SRO'S) and one DARE Officer. However, a second officer has been recently
been assigned to DARE and she should be in the school system at the beginning
of 2007. The two school resource officers are assigned to LaGrange High
School and Troup County High School respectively. Each officer spends
the entire school day in the school working as a resource for the students
and school officials. The school resource officer acts not only as a resource,
but also as a problem solver for the school officials and students. Both
officers are responsible for assisting in the education of the students
by teaching classes on related topics such as Juvenile Crime, Drug use
and behavior modification. Additionally, they serve as a liaison between
the police department and the school and between the school and juvenile
authorities when necessary.
The DARE Officers are primarily responsible for teaching the DARE program
at the various middle and elementary schools within LaGrange. Presently
the DARE officer teaches the DARE program at 11 middle and elementary
schools. Additionally, the DARE officer with the assistance of the SRO’s
sponsor or participate in many events throughout the year geared towards
the education and awareness of drug prevention for juveniles including
the annual Youth Citizen Police Academy.
