City of LaGrange
|Mayor Jeff Lukken is serving in his third term as Mayor of City of LaGrange.
Mr. Lukken moved with his family as a child to LaGrange and is a graduate of LaGrange High School. In 1977 he received an accounting degree from the University of Notre Dame and followed with a law degree from the University of Georgia in 1980, passing the bar exam in the same year.
Throughout his career he has practiced law, been a successful businessman, and has been a director on numerous local boards and agencies, as well as his church.
While in office, Mayor Lukken has worked with the city council to eliminate all property taxes on citizens and businesses, which was accomplished in 1997. He is committed to seeing the city provides top notch public safety programs. Mayor Lukken and the City Council have provided resources and leadership to assure LaGrange’s public safety department’s police and fire services have developed to the point that they have become recognized nationally as among the best in their respective fields. He has been committed to the economic development of the community with an emphasis on assuring quality growth so that the character of LaGrange is maintained while the community moves forward. Transportation and the improved delivery of government service are high priorities for Mayor Lukken. He is constantly working for the preservation of West Point Lake. Recently he met with the Congressional delegation in Washington DC to enlist their assistance in achieving higher winter pool levels for the lake to assure its usability and in creased safety for boaters during winter months.
Under Mayor Lukken’s leadership, the City began its program of building broadband infrastructure to assure LaGrange remained competitive and thrived in the global markets of the information age. Part of that effort saw LaGrange become the first city in the world to provide free hardware, software, and universal internet access from LaGrange Internet TV initiative at the turn of the century. Because of the focus and visionary leadership of the mayor and the council, the City of LaGrange was the first city in the western hemisphere to receive the Intelligent City of the Year Award from the World Teleport Association, which Mayor Lukken accepted in Calgary, Canada in early 2002. This also led the city to be recognized by Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in the “Innovations in American Government Program.” Mayor Lukken has received an Executive Leadership Award from Government Executive Magazine and was proud to accept the City of Excellence Award on behalf of the City from the Georgia Municipal Association.
Mayor Lukken doesn’t limit his public leadership just to LaGrange. He has been called upon by Georgia governors and US representatives to serve this state and the federal government. These appointments have included the Governors Technology Task Force, the Governor’s Rural development Council and Congressman Lynn Westmoreland’s Energy Council.
Mayor Lukken practices law in LaGrange and provides professional assistance in business development.
Jeff’s wife Cindy is a schoolteacher at West Side Magnet School. Mayor and Mrs. Lukken have three children, Molly and Meghan, who are students at Georgia Tech and Jeffrey who is a student at LaGrange High.
Mayor Lukken is excited about the opportunity to lead the City forward at the dawn of this new millennium. He is committed to progressive and quality growth for the citizens of LaGrange that will assure that LaGrange remains a center of excellence, quality living, and vitality in the West Georgia area.
